Top 5 Essential Oils for Cleaning
Spring is here and that means it’s time for some spring cleaning! But why use household cleaners that contain toxic chemicals harmful to your health, when you can use essential oils to clean your home? And better yet, who doesn’t like a home smelling fresh with a hint of lemon or calm and aromatic with a touch of lavender? Essential oils have a wide variety of uses, from relieving headaches, treating infections, and acting as natural disinfectants. So instead of spending money on toxic cleaners, create your own cleansers that are just as effective, yet eco-friendly, and safe for you and your loved ones with these top 5 essential oils.
1 – Lemon – Lemon is such a great essential oil to have as it is antiseptic, antiviral and anti fungal, making it such an effective cleanser and natural disinfectant for your home. It can be used as an all purpose cleaner to brighten floors, remove window spots, shower mildew and even laundry stains, all in while giving your entire home a fresh and clean smell. To make an all purpose cleaner, fill a spray bottle with water, 2 tablespoons of Castile soap, and 10-20 drops of Lemon essential oil. For window cleaner, fill a spray bottle with 4 oz. white vinegar and 3 drops lemon oil and mix well. You can also freshen laundry by adding a couple drops to your laundry detergent or dryer sheets, which will add a clean citrus smell to your clothes.
2 – Lavender – Lavender is also anti fungal and anti bacterial and has a pleasant scent that can uplift everyone’s mood at home. Clean and deodorize your carpet by adding 8 drops of lavender essential oil to 1/2 cup of baking soda. Sprinkle over your carpet and let sit before vacuuming. It’s a natural way to get rid of any odors and freshen up any room. Also, like lemon essential oil above, lavender can also be used to freshen up your laundry by adding a couple drops to your detergent and dryer sheets.
3- Rosemary – Rosemary is more than being a flavorful herb people use when cooking. It has a distinctive woody and mint aroma and can be used as a natural air freshener, an all purpose cleaner, and even as an natural insect and mosquito repellent. Create your own multi-purpose cleaning spray by mixing 1/2 cup of white vinegar, 1/2 cup of water and 10-12 drops of rosemary essential oil in a spray bottle. It’s anti bacterial and antiseptic properties makes it perfect to use to wipe down kitchen counter tops. To make your own mosquito and bug repellent, mix 10-20 drops to each ounce of water in a spray bottle and mix. You now have a natural and safe repellent without any of the toxic chemicals!
4 – Tea Tree – Tea tree essential oil is perfect to use to get rid of mold and mildew due to its powerful antiseptic, anti fungal and anti bacterial properties. It can also be used to get rid of musty smells around the house. To create your own natural shower cleaner, take 2 cups of water and 2 teaspoons of tea tree essential oil and mix well in a spray bottle. Spray on mildew and moldy areas in shower areas or around faucets in the bathrooms and let sit for a few minutes before rinsing off. Also use tea tree to mop and clean your floors by adding 3-4 drops in a bucket of soapy water.
5 – Peppermint – Peppermint essential oil has anti bacterial properties and can be used to purify the air and also act as a pest repellent. It also blends well with other essential oils such as lemon, rosemary, and eucalyptus to create an aromatic blend. Like any of the essential oils listed above, peppermint can be used as a multi purpose cleaner or air freshener to freshen up and clean your home with a refreshing and minty aroma.
