Top 5 Essential Oils for Allergies

Spring is coming and for a lot of people, that also means allergies.  Essential oils in general are known for having a variety of healing properties and benefits.  But did you know using essential oils are a safe and natural way to fight off allergies and boost the immune system?   With allergies, essential oils help to detoxify the body and fight inflammation and bacteria.  They also help to fight infections, parasites, and harmful toxins. Below are the Top 5.

1 – Peppermint Oil – Peppermint oil may be one of the most versatile essential oils used, along with Lavender.  It can help remedy a wide variety of ailments, and known for its’ soothing and calming effects to the body. In regards to allergies, Peppermint oil is highly effective at relaxing muscles in your nasal passages and can help unclog the sinuses, discharge phlegm, and reduce inflammation when diffused and inhaled, providing some allergy relief.   Peppermint oil can also be taken internally to help reduce inflammation, by adding 1 -2 drops to a glass of water or tea.  It may also be used topically, applying a few drops to your chest, temple area or behind the neck.

2 – Eucalyptus Oil – Eucalyptus oil improves circulation in the body and reduces allergy symptoms by dilating the blood vessels and allowing more oxygen into the lungs.  It also works as an expectorant and helps cleanse your body of toxins and harmful microorganisms that can make you feel sick. Eucalyptus oil can also be diffused or applied topically to the chest or temples to help with allergies and clear nasal passages.

3 – Tea Tree Oil – Tea tree oil is generally known for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties, and its ability to kill mold, bacteria and fungi.  It is a powerful essential oil that can kill airborne pathogens that cause allergies. With skin allergies and rashes, tea tree can be applied topically to treat irritated skin.  Add 2-3 drops to a cotton ball and gently apply to the affected area.  Diffusing a few drops of oil in your home will also kill off any harmful bacteria in the air.

4 – Lemon Oil – Lemon oil helps to boost the immune system and inhibits the growth of bacteria.  It also helps support lymphatic drainage system (body’s inner drainage system) and cleanse the body from toxins.  Diffused, lemon oil kills bacteria and any allergens in the air.  Add 1 -2 drops to a glass of water for some lemon water, which boosts your immune system by stimulating the liver and white cell production, helping to protect and detoxify the body.  Lemon oil is also a natural disinfectant  and can be used around the home to keep away bacteria and other allergens in the air.

5 – Basil Oil – Basil oil is used to heal wounds and infections, having anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antibiotic properties.  It reduces the inflammatory response of allergens and helps to detoxify the body of any viruses and bacteria. Adding 1 -2 drops to a nice steam bath helps to clear nasal passages and support the respiratory system.  It can also be taken internally by adding a drop to some soup or any other dish.  Like Tea Tree or Lemon oil, diffusing basil around the home can kill off any bacteria and purify the air.
