Healthy Habits – Each Change Can Help
Chronic ailments such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer are the world’s top killers, causing 35 million deaths a year and 60 percent of all deaths worldwide. There are at least 1 billion people who are overweight or obese in the world today, according to the World Health Organization. WHO is now focusing attention on reducing non-communicable chronic diseases. They have stated that their goal is to prevent premature deaths and avoid unnecessary disability due to chronic diseases. The solutions exist now, and many are simple, cheap and cost effective which include promoting healthy living (better diet, more physical activity and tobacco cessation) and healthy societies, especially for the poor and those living in disadvantaged populations.
- 9 million people die from tobacco use
- 6 million people die as a result of being overweight or obese
- 4 million people die due to raised cholesterol levels
- 1 million people die because of high blood pressure
Common risk factors, which are the major causes of chronic diseases include that can be modified include:
- Unhealthy diet
- Physical inactivity
- Tobacco use
According to a UK research report, over 40% of cancers could be prevented by a healthier lifestyle because most cancers were linked to smoking, diet, excess alcohol or excess weight.
The National Cancer Center in Japan identified five cancer risk factors: smoking, excessive drinking, excessive salt intake, lack of exercise and high body mass index. The risk of cancer increases with each of these individually and is even greater when examined collectively.
According to the NCC study, the more healthy habits subjects had, the lower their cancer risk. They found that the adoption of just one healthy habit would reduce cancer risks by 14 percent for males and by 9 percent for females.
“It is really quite simple. Bad habits = bad health. If you want to be healthy, you need to have healthy habits.
